This is what consistency looks like
When you're tired, show up regardless. Those are the moments that separate the 10% from the rest.
One thing people get wrong about consistency is that they think it looks the same on all days. They couldn’t be more wrong.
We’re humans, and we get tired sometimes. Though this is not an excuse to slack off or be complacent, it's an indication that you can’t perform at full gear all the time. It’s just impossible.
So, what happens when you’re not in full gear? Well, you do it regardless.
How?
Now, let’s discuss that.
The whole point of consistency is to do something so often that it not only becomes second nature, but also moves you towards your goals.
Let’s imagine you set a goal to run 10 kilometres every morning. Then, if you wake up on a particular morning and don’t feel motivated or enthusiastic to run, what you can do is run a shorter distance than you initially planned.
This does two things for you:
1. You tick off your running goal for that day
2. You send a message to your inner self that you’ll do things regardless of your feelings, no matter how little.
More than running 10 kilometres, it’s more important that you run every day, even if it’s 2 kilometres.
More than writing 1,000 words, it’s more important that you write every day, even if it’s just 100 words.
More than reading 150 pages, it’s more important that you read every day, even if it’s 10 pages.
You get the idea now.
Most people will cancel their plan when they don’t feel like it, but if you do it regardless, no matter how little, that’s when you stack the odds in your favour.
You know, someone who ran 2 kilometres is better than someone who didn’t run at all. Someone who wrote 100 words is better than someone who didn’t write at all.
And sometimes, all it takes is to run 2 kilometres, and then before you know it, you’re already running 10 kilometres, as initially planned. You plan to write 100 words because you're tired, and before you know it, you're already on the 1000th word.
Pushing through the initial resistance is the hack.
